GYM DESIGN #1: Small Gym

Small Gym Design

Concept:

~500 square feet

Square footage estimate:

Designed for a small area with a focus on accessibility and affordability for underserved communities.

Use Case:

Based on having a smaller workable space, this small gym design reduces the amount of unnecessary equipment and focuses on optimal equipment that is either multi-functional or most regularly used.

DESIGN PRIORITIES

Functionality:

Designing for optimal use of space and choosing equipment that will provide the most benefit to the largest number of guests.

Consistency:

Incorporating the boxing ring towards the back of the space as a focal point allows us to maintain a signature design style across all sizes of gyms.

Accessibility:

Creating a space that can be built anywhere and is more affordable to build than a larger space while still offering similar athletic benefits.

Inclusivity:

Ensuring that even in a small space, a community gathering area is included.

ELEMENTS INCORPORATED

  • Designed for small areas.

  • A boxing area towards the back of the gym’s usable space to increase the walkable area and make the best use of the square footage allotted.

    • Because the boxing ring is situated in the back, it serves as a focal point of the space.

    • In front of the ring, there’s room for seats to be set up for events. These seats can be folded stored when not in use.

    • Along the left and right side of the ring, there are boxing bags and equipment.

    • Equipment selected for the boxing area is multifunctional, either for people interested in boxing or a non-boxing related workout while still staying simple (i.e. speed bag, heavy bag).

  • Other area in the front is focused on cardio and strength-training (cardio on one side and weight-lifting equipment on the other).

    • Equipment selected on the cardio side incorporates treadmills, bikes and stairmasters (multifunctional machines that target different muscle groups)

    • Equipment selected for the strength section: bench press, free weights like dumbbells and cable machine

  • Minimal entrance/reception area with small desk and two small changing spaces.

    • Featured right off of the entranceway is a room dedicated to engaging community members with a long table for meeting and a juice bar. This room has a glass wall, making it feel more connected to the rest of the gym.
