This project began as a result of the love and community that exercising and going to gyms has provided, a feeling that can be, and should be shared with others. Furthermore creating a gym that can be more functional and focuses more on community can help bring out the best in gyms and help people of different communities come together and share a love of fitness.
To implement this project, the employment of the design thinking methodology, which is:
-
Creating a goal
-
Planning out steps to achieve this goal
-
Researching to understand how to approach these steps
-
Creating concepts based on research to sketch out ideas
-
Creating the actual product and implying my research and steps
Interviews were conducted between people in my neighborhood, people I met at different training facilities, my trainer, etc.
I learned that many people not only see but experience many flaws in gyms they attend. Specifically many people that I had interviewed claimed that gyms either had too much unnecessary equipment, did not have good transition places from the outside of the gym to beginning a workout, or not using space appropriately to organize different sections or machinery in the gyms.
I then learned how to use Sketch Up as I had never used it before. Once I did that, I began working on my designs. I created these three types of gyms because they could be used as more functional design concepts that could be implemented in different scenarios and places, such as a warehouse gym, an apartment building or hotel gym, or a small storefront space.
Here are my key takeaways:
-
Stay persistent: Continuing to work on researching best ideas and making them feasible by improving upon them and taking the steps to develop your ideas to the best of your ability.
-
Persevere: There were tools and methods I didn’t know how to utilize before beginning this project, but I persevered and eventually learned my way through.
-
Do thorough research: Make sure not to cut any corners and to research all your information in order to provide the best version of your work.
-
Focus on user experience: Throughout this process, I’ve always tried to put myself in the user's shoes. This has helped me design spaces for others rather than for myself.
